Where dance meets acrobatics
Acro dance combines the excitement of learning acrobatic skills with the strength, flexibility, control and movement quality needed to perform them safely and confidently.
At Theative Performing Arts, our acro dance classes in Streatham focus on developing strong foundations and progressive skills, while helping students understand how acrobatics can become part of their wider dance training.
Building strong foundations
Great acro isn't about rushing to learn the biggest trick as quickly as possible.
Students develop the physical foundations that allow them to progress safely, including:
Strength and conditioning
Flexibility and mobility
Balance and control
Coordination and body awareness
Limbering and tumbling
Safe acrobatic technique
Skills are introduced progressively, with students encouraged to celebrate what they can do now while continuing to work towards what they can't do yet.
Acro for younger dancers
Our Tumble & Twirl Acrodance class gives younger children a playful introduction to acrobatics and dance.
Through imaginative, age-appropriate activities, children explore early acro foundations such as shapes, balances, strength, flexibility, coordination and introductory tumbling.
The focus is on building confidence, body awareness and strong foundations rather than rushing young children into advanced tricks.
Acro for developing dancers
As students grow, their training becomes progressively more technical.
Older dancers work on age and level-appropriate skills across strength, flexibility, balance, limbering and tumbling, developing the technique and physical preparation needed to progress towards more challenging acrobatics.
Every dancer develops at a different rate, so students are encouraged to focus on their own progress rather than comparing skills with somebody else.
Acro that complements dance training
We want our students to become great acrobatic dancers, not simply collect tricks.
An impressive acrobatic skill becomes far more useful when a dancer can enter and exit it with control, connect it smoothly into choreography and perform it with musicality and confidence.
For this reason, our developing acro training is designed to complement students' regular dance classes. Some acro training is offered alongside modern dance, with half of the class dedicated to Modern Theatre and half dedicated to Acro, rather than the two styles being taught as a fusion.
Participation requirements may apply to some acro classes to ensure students are also receiving appropriate core dance training.
Beginners are welcome
Children do not need previous acrobatics experience to start in an appropriate class.
Placement depends on age, experience and the level of the available group. Where a child falls between our younger and older groups, we may recommend beginning with a trial so the teacher can determine which option offers the right balance of challenge, confidence and safety.
Small classes for safe, individual progress
Our acro classes are intentionally kept small, allowing teachers to supervise skills carefully and give students individual corrections and support.
This is particularly valuable in acro, where students may be working towards different skills and progressions within the same class.
