Make music with your feet
Tap is dance and percussion rolled into one. Students learn to create rhythm through their feet while developing coordination, timing, musicality and performance skills.
Our tap classes in Streatham are energetic, engaging and full of personality. They're a brilliant choice for dancers who love rhythm, enjoy making a little noise and want to explore a style with its own unmistakable character.
What do children learn in tap?
Students build a vocabulary of tap steps and gradually learn how different sounds fit together into rhythms, combinations and choreography.
Tap helps dancers develop:
Rhythm and musicality
Coordination and precise footwork
Balance and weight transfer
Listening and timing
Clarity and control
Confidence and performance skills
As students progress, they learn to produce clearer sounds, tackle more complex rhythms and perform with increasing confidence and style.
Become part of the music
One of the things that makes tap so special is the relationship it creates between dance and music.
Tap dancers don't simply move to the beat. They become part of it.
Students learn to listen carefully, recognise rhythmic patterns and understand how timing, dynamics and accents can completely change the quality of a performance. These musical skills can support their development across other dance styles too.
Perfect for dancers with plenty of pizazz
Every dance style has a different personality, and tap has plenty of its own.
It's particularly satisfying for children who enjoy rhythm, detail, musical challenges and expressive performance. There's something wonderfully rewarding about finally mastering a tricky combination and hearing all those sounds fall into place.
And you don't need to be the loudest personality in the room to love tap. Quieter dancers can enjoy the technical challenge just as much as natural performers enjoy bringing the steps to life.
Small classes, meaningful feedback
Our classes are intentionally kept small, allowing teachers to listen to individual dancers, correct technique and help students develop clear, accurate sounds.
That individual attention becomes increasingly important as tap vocabulary and rhythms become more complex and students progress through their training.
Tap training that grows with your dancer
Our tap teaching progresses with students as they grow, from early foundations through to increasingly technical training.
Developing dancers may also have opportunities to work towards graded tap examinations, building technique, musicality and performance skills through structured progression.
Current availability varies by age, so check the relevant age-group page to see which tap classes are accepting new students.
