Modern dance, often referred to more generally as jazz dance, is an energetic and versatile style combining strong dance technique with expressive, dynamic movement.

At Theative Performing Arts, our modern and jazz dance classes in Streatham help children develop coordination, flexibility, strength and musicality while learning exciting movements, combinations and routines.

Students work on skills including kicks, turns, leaps, travelling steps, flexibility, rhythm and choreography, alongside developing the confidence and performance quality to really bring their dancing to life.

Our modern programme grows with your child. Younger dancers begin by developing coordination, musicality and confidence through fun, age-appropriate movement. As they progress, students develop increasingly sophisticated technique, vocabulary, artistry and performance skills.

Classes are designed to provide an appropriate level of challenge while creating an encouraging environment where dancers can experiment, make mistakes and keep progressing.

More than learning the steps

Modern and jazz dance gives children the opportunity to develop both as technicians and as performers.

Alongside physical skills such as strength, flexibility and coordination, dancers learn to pick up choreography, respond to different styles of music, project to an audience and bring their own personality to their dancing.

Modern also works brilliantly alongside ballet, tap and acro, helping children develop into versatile and well-rounded dancers.
