The perfect age to discover a love of dance

The preschool years are a wonderful time to begin dancing.

At Theative Performing Arts, our preschool dance classes in Streatham introduce children to movement, music and dance technique through creativity, imagination and play, giving them strong foundations without expecting little dancers to learn like much older children.

Classes are designed to build confidence and independence while keeping the magic and joy of dancing firmly at the heart of the experience.

Ballet classes for preschoolers

Our preschool ballet classes introduce young dancers to the foundations of ballet through music, stories, imaginative themes and age-appropriate exercises.

As children progress beyond our youngest parent-and-child classes, they begin developing greater independence while learning skills such as:

  • Ballet positions and introductory technique

  • Posture, balance and coordination

  • Musicality and rhythm

  • Spatial awareness

  • Listening and concentration

  • Creative movement and expression

  • Confidence and independence

The foundations may be carefully planned, but to our little dancers it still feels like an adventure.

Tumble, twirl and discover acrodance

For preschoolers who love to climb, balance, roll and explore what their bodies can do, we also offer Tumble & Twirl Acrodance.

This playful class introduces early acrobatic dance foundations through imaginative, age-appropriate activities. Children develop strength, flexibility, balance, coordination and body awareness while exploring introductory acro skills and creative movement.

There is no need for children to arrive already knowing how to tumble. The focus is on developing the foundations they will need for future skills safely and confidently.

Learning through imagination

Preschool children learn brilliantly when an activity captures their imagination.

That's why our classes don't simply ask young children to repeat exercises. Stories, music, props, characters and creative ideas help transform the skills we're teaching into something children can understand, remember and enjoy.

Behind all that imagination, they're learning how to listen to their teacher, follow instructions, move with greater control, participate in a group and persevere when something takes a little practice.

Growing confidence and independence

For many preschoolers, dance is one of their first activities where they begin participating increasingly independently from their parent or carer.

We understand that confidence doesn't develop at exactly the same speed for every child.

Our teachers encourage children to have a go, celebrate their progress and become increasingly confident in the studio, while recognising that some children need a little more time to observe and settle into something new.

Intentionally small classes for little dancers

Our preschool classes are intentionally kept small, helping us create a warm and supportive environment where teachers can get to know each child.

Smaller groups give little dancers more opportunities for individual encouragement, meaningful feedback and teacher interaction, while still developing the important social skills that come from learning alongside other children.

Dance classes that grow with them

Starting dance during the preschool years can be the beginning of a much longer journey.

As children grow, they can progress into our older age groups and explore ballet, modern, tap, acro and Triple Threat Musical Theatre, with opportunities for increasingly technical training, examinations and performances as they develop.

They don't need to decide where dance will take them now. They just need a wonderful place to begin.
